Darling Downs Under 16 Juniors 2nd Semi Final – University Cougars v Dalby Swans
The Under 16 Semi Final mirrors the Under 12 matchup with the University Cougars having lost just one match all season playing against Dalby who has lost 2.
This match is a rematch of the 2011 thriller of a Grand Final, however the players have changed significantly. Dalby have lost the boys who have played well all season at the Crows winning the flag, while University have lost their Sudanese boys who won the Reserve Grade flag.
Both matches this season between the sides have coincided with Dalby players missing matches either through school sport or maybe just massive potholes on the Warrego highway swallowing cars whole. Either way, all reports suggest that Dalby will finally be full strength for this matchup.
Harry Milford is the key for the Swans up forward, kicking 48 goals during the season. Brodie Easton will be looking to send the ball straight down his throat with some tireless work through the midfield as will Max Gaur off of half-back.
The man who can’t be forgotten is Dan Mauch. He polled 32 votes in 11 matches last season to win the best and fairest, represented the region AND the state in the U15 Schoolboys this year and dominated school footy. If the Cougars don’t stop his silky skills they may as well start preparing for next week’s Preliminary Final against the Bombers right now.
Like the Under 12s the Cougars strength lies in their smaller brigade. Ryan Colclough & Josh Moloney provide plenty of midfield drive and are well supported off of half-back from their skipper Sam Cooper and Tim O’Dea who has played more matches than any player in the competition this season lining up for both senior sides.
Connor Pyke has also been exceptional averaging over 4 goals a match, along with their Irish import Sam Banim.
For this match, the midfield battle will be key, followed by converting your chances. The Cougars probably have the upper hand in the midfield and will get more shots on goal, however are frequently let down by their inaccuracy in front of goal.
