Redland clung on desperately to save their season with a six-point win over a brave and battered Broadbeach at Victoria Point today.

The Bombers controlled the football for the last 90 seconds of the game after Broadbeach had drawn to within one straight kick, winning 15.6 (96) to 14.6 (90).

It gave the Bombers a 4-5 record at the halfway point of the season, the same as the Cats and the NT Thunder, and one less than Mt Gravatt and the Brisbane Lions in a crowded race for the top five at the halfway mark of the season.

The Bombers had star recruit Scott Clouston to thank, the centre-half-forward producing a matchwinning performance that was crowned by a spectacular high mark in the second quarter.

Clever goalsneak Ben Weightman contributed five valuable goals, while Clouston and fellow former Brisbane Lion Daniel Dzufer grabbed two each.

The Bombers were in complete control at halftime with a 27-point break, but the Cats stormed back to level the scores at the last change.

Cats co-captain Dayne Zorko booted 2.3 in the third term to galvanise his side after they were left reeling early by the loss of important tall utility Darin Stewart and prolific ballwinner Matt Fife.

Redland skipper Phil Carse was not going to sit by and watch his side drop another close contest and capped a fine game with a big last quarter, while Tom Salter and Josh Norman were in the thick of the action.

Matt Thomson locked down on Zorko in the final term, although the lively Cat still was able to conjure one more goal to finish with three for the half.

The Bombers were delighted with the contribution of slippery running player Jamie Hackett, with Trent Manzone doing plenty of clever things for his side.

Simon Russell worked overtime for the Cats, who have dropped their last two games after a strong start to the season.

Ben Walters stepped up after Stewart was injured in the opening five minutes while Josh Searl provided plenty of drive from half-back in a free-flowing contest.
