The Gold Coast’s Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School has taken out the annual Jonathan Brown Cup.
Played between the South East Queensland Schools of Excellence, the ‘JB Cup’ is decided over two days and is an introductory competition for Year 8 students, played in a 9-a-side format.
Normally played in Term 1 each year, this year’s wet weather washed out both days and the competition was moved to Term 4.
The schools played a round robin of games to qualify for finals, where PBC and the Sunshine Coast’s Mountain Creek State High went through as the two strongest contenders. PBC were too strong for the competition newcomers who put up a great contest, winning 8.4.52 to 1.2.8.
Helensvale State High met Narangba State High in the last round, after both teams played out an exciting game in the rounds, Helensvale were dominant in the final to win 9.3.57 to 3.3.21.
Park Ridge State High surprised Sandgate District High in their final game to finish 5th with all boys showing great improvement through the carnival. Final scores were 4.4.28 to 1.4.10.
Benowa State High defeated PBC B in the Pool B division by less than a goal in their final game, 6.3.39 to 5.6.36.
The JB Cup premiership completes a stellar year for the PBC Junior team who have also won the Schools of Excellence Junior Division, defeated Gold Coast SUNS Cup U14 champions Keebra Park State High, then went on to represent Queensland and win the AFL Northern States Cup in September.
The Jonathan Brown Cup will return to Term 1 in 2013.
