Will Hamill’s wet weather form helped him over the line at last weekend’s Jim Fletcher Medal, awarded to Mt Gravatt’s best and fairest.
Hamill finished on 47 votes to claim the win, with Vultures captain, Joe Murphy, second on 40 and Frazer Neate third with 36 votes.
The 28 year-old said he was pleasantly surprised to take out the major prize of the night.
“I thought Joe Murphy would’ve won,” he said.
“I’m definitely proud to win it.”
In the close count, Hamill said it was his showings in the rain that gave him the edge.
“The (voting) system probably favours having some standout games, rather than maybe a really consistent year,” he said.
“I polled a few more when it was wet.”
Murphy didn’t go home empty-handed, with the 23 year-old winning the Players’ Player award.
Todd Carbone, who showed potential at both ends of the field this season, collected the Rising Star award, capping off his strong debut senior season, while Cam Ross clinched the Coaches’ Award.
After missing the entirety of the 2013 season, Chris Murphy bounced back in 2014, rewarded for his late season surge, taking out the Best Player in Finals.
After falling just a kick short of a preliminary final this season, Hamill said he was looking forward to what 2015 would bring.
“In the end I thought we were pretty stiff, we had momentum going into the finals,” he said.
“I don’t’ think we exceeded our own expectations, maybe externally we did…it was a good year.”
I think we’ll certainly be competing (next year), we’ll have a couple of blokes back and be a good chance, I think.”
