The AFL Commission visited the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex at Burpengary on Monday, as part of AFL Draft Week.

The $13 mil  complex will be home to the Caboolture Lions from 2014, and has also been flagged as a possible venue for NEAFL and pre-season AFL matches.

AFL chairman, Mike Fitzpatrick, said the facility was one of the best community set-ups he had seen.

“The quality and functionality of this is comparable with the best community sports facilities in Australia,” he said.

“We’ll be seeing the benefit of this for decades to come.”

Fitzpatrick said the development of the facility, which includes three football ovals as well as state of the art amenities, would be crucial to continuing the development of Australian football in South-East Queensland.

“I am confident we will continue to foster terrific talent and I understand the signs are already good (in the region),” he said.

AFL Queensland worked with the Moreton Bay Regional Council to develop the facility, and Fitzpatrick paid tribute to the local government for its dedication to the project.

“This facility speaks volumes of the council’s commitment to supporting AFL.”

Moreton Bay Acting Mayor, Cr Mike Charlton, said the area would reap long-term benefits from the facility.

“We hope this will be looked at as the number one regional sporting facility in the area,” he said.

“Most of us on council look at our role as creating or enabling the creation of communities, and this complex is part of that philosophy.”
