Brisbane finished well to defeat a fighting Gold Coast outfit, coming back from a goal down at half time to win 5.8 (38) – 2.3 (15).
Some superb goal kicking from Tayla Harris gave the Flames some second half momentum, with the 17 year-old slotting a spectacular 40m goal on the run in the third term.
Hannah Sexton was also prolific for the Flames in defence, stopping her opponents and collecting plenty of the ball for herself.
Gold Coast captain, Zoe Lattanzi, was once again a standout for her side against the Flames, showing her class with the ball in hand.
Alicia Murray was another strong contributor for the Gold Coast in a high quality match.
In the other final qualifier, the Storm survived a scoreless second half to finish with a three-point win over the South West Magpies, 4.2 (26) – 5.3 (23).
The Magpies started the better of the two sides, kicking with the breeze, but it was the Storm who stole the show in the second half.
Tahlia Randall showed her running abilities all over the ground, while Kate Kershaw was courageous in the contests.
Sunshine Coast’s pressure in the second quarter was excellent, epitomised by a sensational chase from Morgan Whitney that eventually led to a goal.
The Magpies dominated the second half but ran out of time to nab the lead, falling agonisingly short of a final berth.
Toowoomba product, Georgie Seaniger, was a standout for her side in the close loss.
The morning’s matches saw some quality football being played between the four losing sides from Day One.
North Queensland picked up its first win of the competition, with a 6.11 (47) – 2.1 (13) win over the Capricornia Cobras.
The Lions were dominant from the outset, with some fierce tackling pressure and impressive attacking run.
They kicked the opening two goals and never looked back, booking a spot in tomorrow’s fifth place playoff with their efforts.
In the other early game, the WCCCA Sub-Regional Trust Crusaders claimed a 7.11 (53) – 4.2 (26) win over the Papua New Guinea Kurukums.
The win sets up a battle of the Far North for fifth tomorrow.
