The Brisbane Flames claimed back-to-back Youth Girls State titles today, with a 9.6 (60 – 2.1 (13) win over the Suncoast Storm.

The Storm were the surprise packet of the competition, in only their second year in the comp, pushing the Flames all day.

Flames co-captain, and leading goal kicker for the carnival, Maddie Protheroe showed off her excellent finishing skills with four in the decider.

Northern Territory products, Jessica Stassi and Ellanora Moreen, also stood up for the big game, playing their best matches of the championships.

Storm captain, Shannon Campbell, continued her super form, running hard all day.

Defender, Lucy Thompson, also stood out for the Sunny Coast side in the final, with the Storm’s defensive efforts superb.

The Flames’ superior skills got them over the line, linking up well in transition, despite the Storm’s ferocious pressure.

There was plenty of remarkable footy in the other games played today, to decide the final team positions.

The South West Magpies clinched third spot, with a 10.5 (65)  – 1.3 (9) victory over the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast’s girls were out on their feet by the final siren, after losing a couple of players to injury, in conditions that were always going to be gruelling, at the end of a three-day carnival played in the Brisbane heat.

The Magpies’ Isabella Baldock led from the front, with another great performance for her side.

The WCCCA Sub-Regional Trust Crusaders nabbed fifth, with a 9.6 (60) – 5.1 win over the North Queensland Lions.

Papua New Guinea celebrated as if they’d won it all, when they claimed their first win in the competition,  5.15 (45) – 2.1 (13) over the Capricornia Cobras.

The Kurukums have improved steadily through the competition, and were once again unrelenting against the Cobras.

Sunshine Coast captain, Campbell, was awarded the Julia Price Medal as the best of the carnival.
