SEQAFL Cup 1st semi-final preview

Broadbeach take on Labrador for the fifth time this season in the 1st Semi Final at Redland on Sunday.

The Cats will start favorites on the back of a 4 -0 record against the Tigers during season 2012, with margins of 69, 16, 76 and 26 points.

Labrador Coach Chad Owens has turned around his team’s fortunes this season to be one of the most improved teams in the SEQAFL Cup.

After successive finals campaigns in 2009 and 2010, the Tigers reserves went winless during 2011, partly due to a horror injury run at the club.

A list rebuild with a focus on youth has seen a dramatic improvement in 2012 with 10 wins and a fourth place finish at the end of the home and away fixtures.

Class players Like Michael Talbot and Jeff Garing will lead the young tigers into battle so they are not to be underestimated.

Broadbeach, after winning just 6 reserve grade games in the past 3 seasons, have also turned to a youth policy with instant results.

12 wins for the season and third place on the ladder is a sign things are looking good for the future at H & A Oval.

Coach Rob Martin has his young team playing some exciting footy, and with the likes of Queensland Under 16 co-captain Lachie Weller in the side, the depth of talent may be a deciding factor.

One concern for Martin would be his team’s conversion. The Cats have kicked a combined score of 44 goals 55 against the Tiger this season, so the Cats will need to rectify this on Sunday.

This game promises to be a great clash with plenty of young talent on display, but a 4 -0 season record against Labrador should see Broadbeach advance to the preliminary final.
