Pacific Paradise take Lions Cup

The Sunshine Coast Junior Brisbane Lions Cup (Primary School Girls) has been wrapped up for another year in windy conditions at Fishermans Road, Maroochydore.

With 12 teams competing from nine schools across the Coast the girls had the opportunity to lay some tackles, kick some goals and be a part of their school team.

With two teams each coming from Mountain Creek, Stella Maris and St Thomas More these schools put their footy skills on show, demonstrating why they are the powerhouse schools of Youth Girls footy participants on the Coast.

AFL Sunshine Coast Development Officer, Rohan Briggs said that the day was a huge success aside the cool south easterly breeze.

“It has been a really good day for some quality Youth Girls AFL action, the sun was out and all of the girls had smiles on their faces which is what we are after,” Briggs said.

“We are obviously stoked to have so many schools on board, supporting the girls and AFL development on the Sunshine Coast.

“We never really know what to expect from these events but the quality of footy was surprising with the girls really showing why they love contact sports… they have that competitive edge that really makes our game (AFL) so exciting.”

The grand final was contested by last year’s reining premiers, Pacific Paradise and the competitive unit from St Andrews.

Field Umpire, Dale Carlish said the game was played in great spirit with both teams putting on an awesome display of AFL.

“It was a really high quality game, both schools were competitive and applied great pressure around the ball and across the field,” Carlish said.

“The girls from St Andrews got really excited with about five minutes remaining because they kicked two goals unanswered and were nine points up.

“Then from seemingly nowhere the Pacific Paradise girls lifted and kicked two straight as well, it was great footy to watch, their footy skills were really clean and they were quick through the centre.”

Pacific Paradise took the honours in the dying minutes 2.4.16 to 2.0.12.

Congratulations to Pacific Paradise for retaining the Brisbane Lions Cup and well done to St Andrews for playing a solid brand of footy all day and reaching the grand final.

Players of the match for the Grand Final were awarded to Mia from St Andrews and Tahnee from Pacific Paradise.
