Mountain Creek through in Jnr & Snr for Youth Girls Cup

In muddy conditions the junior and senior Sunshine Coast  division, Youth Girls Cup was fought out at Fishermans Road, Maroochydore.

With 12 schools from across the Coast represented amongst 19 teams, it was a great AFL experience for Youth Girls on the Sunshine Coast.

In the Junior division Mountain Creek State College entered three teams with two teams making the finals giving the Creekers plenty to cheer about, with Nambour, Chancellor Park, Caloundra, St Andrews and St Johns all represented.

In a solid day of competition the semi-finals was a hard slog for St Andrews and Chancellor with scores level at the final siren.

The girls then played five minutes each way with Chancellor Park prevailing to contest Mountain Creek in the grand final.

In a tough match the extra time in the previous game for Chancellor proved a massive disadvantage with the Creekers running out winners 3.4.22 to 0.0.0.

On the senior side of the draw there was again strong representation from Mountain Creek with four teams, two teams from Caloundra and Maleny as well as Nambour, St Teresa’s and St Johns.

With three fields on the main oval the girls ripped it up with some awesome team efforts throughout the day and in the finals.

The semi-final between Caloundra and St Teresa’s was a high quality game with both sides going hard at the ball and laying some heavy tackles.

St Teresa’s prevailed and faced off against Mountain Creek in the grand final with the Creekers proving too strong running out winners 5.2.62 to 1.4.10.

AFL Sunshine Coast Development Officer, Dayne Frew was impressed with the standard of footy throughout the day and said the day was a huge success.

“Obviously the day was not ideal with showers and extremely wet, slippery and muddy conditions that the girls had to contend with,” said Frew.

“In saying that, the standard of footy was outstanding with some great individual efforts as well as team pace in the majority of the games.

“With the AFL Sunshine Coast Under 15 Youth Girls competition now in motion it gives these girls the opportunity for progression and further AFL development on the Coast.”

Congratulations to the Mountain Creek junior and senior teams who will now head down to Brisbane and face-off against the best of the best in South-East Queensland for the 2012 Youth Girls Cup.
