A number of regions around Queensland will soon play host to AFL Summer Development Programs, in an effort to provide extra development opportunities for young Queensland footballers.
According to Brisbane Lions Zone Manager Bill Renner, it’s about giving a ‘footy fix’ to young players over the summer, but there’s also a bigger picture.
“For those that are really keen on their footy, it’s obviously an opportunity to engage in footy over the summer, which is fantastic,” said Renner.
“But the real big picture stuff is giving those that are super keen to play representative footy, or even go on to play state or AFL footy, an opportunity to really hone their skills.”
The programs, which include regions as varied as Brisbane South and the Sunshine Coast, will focus on fitness, but also skill development and technique.
“We try and encourage a lot of community coaches to get involved with these programs over the summer and it gives them an opportunity to link in to what is, essentially, the first part of the talent program,” he said.
“We try and also link in the likes of Adrian Fletcher and Craig Starcevich and some of our more senior representative coaches to give a different opinion, or give the kids an opportunity to hear someone different.”
Some of the programs are due to begin in early November, while others kick off late January. All programs will be six weeks, for players turning 12-16 in 2018 for males and 12-17 in 2018 for females.
