Unity Cup squads announced

AFL Queensland will be holding the Inaugural Queensland Unity Cup on November 16^th at Yeronga’s Leyshon Park.

The Unity Cup will engage participants aged 13 – 17 from Multicultural and Indigenous backgrounds across Queensland in two pools, the “Talent” pool, for participants who have played AFL before, and the “Community” Pool, to engage participants new to our game.

AFL Queensland have conducted Diversity Combines across the state in a quest to unearth participants from Diverse backgrounds to play in the two pools of the Unity Cup.

With a few Combines to still to be run, to date, more than 800 participants male and female from Diverse backgrounds have been engaged.

In the “Community” pool we are looking to have Indigenous and Multicultural teams from Toowoomba, Gold Coast and Brisbane involved, while in the “Talent” pool we will have an Indigenous side from North Queensland, an Indigenous side from South East Queensland and two Multicultural teams, one selected from across the state and one from Toowoomba.

The two main objectives of the Unity Cup are:

–          To Utilise Australian Football as a vehicle to engage participants from diverse backgrounds in our game, and create links to community AFL clubs.

–          To identify talented participants, and select initial squads for AFL Q’s 2014 State Indigenous side ( U15 KickStart), 2014 State Multicultural side  (U15 All Nations)  to participate in national championships in April, and Diversity Team to participate in the Kooga U16 AFL Q State U16 Championships.

Attached are the initial squads for the NQ Indigenous side, the SEQ Indigenous side and the Multicultural side that have been selected ( Please note: the squads will be updated once remaining combines have been conducted in the coming weeks).
