Under-18 Scorpions go down fighting

The Queensland Under-18 Scorpions suffered a 40-poitn loss in ther opening National Champs match.

Queensland’s Under-18 Scorpions suffered a 12.28.100 – 9.6.60 loss to heavyweights Vic Metro in their opening National Championship match.

The Queenslanders showed plenty of fight against the defending champions, reducing the margin to only two goals late in the match, before the southerners kicked the final three goals to seal the match.

Despite having far fewer entries into their forward, Queensland converted their opportunities well, boosted by strong performances from Morningisde’s Matthew Hammelman (two goals) and Aspley’s Jonothan Freeman.

The return of Cain Tickner for his first game of the year, also boosted the Scorpions attack.

Working hard in the backline, Redland youngster Luke Rogerson and Aden Rutledge (Aspley) were two of the best for the Scorpions, and kept the Queenslanders in touch for much of the day.

Some of the Scorpions’ younger players stepped up to the challenge, with bottom-agers Lachie Weller (Broadbeach) and Darcy Cameron-Reeves (Morningside).

Queensland has another crack at a Div 1 side in Round 2 of the National Championships, taking on South Australia at Southport on Saturday June 8.
