Umpire Round deemed a success

The 2012 AFL Queensland Umpire Round has been deemed a great success with leagues, clubs supporters and officials from Queensland getting into the spirit of the “Umpiring is everyone’s business” (UIEB) campaign.

Participants showed their support on the day by wearing green armbands, pre-match handshakes between players and umpires and entering the official photo competition via the AFL Queensland’s Facebook page.

AFL Queensland State Umpire Manager, Andrew Reeves said that the response to this year’s Umpire Round has been overwhelming.

“We have received wonderful feedback from clubs and umpires,” said Reeves.

“It’s fantastic to see Queensland clubs and the leagues supporting their local umpires by involving themselves in this campaign.”

This year for a number of regional areas the UIEB campaign coincided with bye weekends due to representative football.

“Whilst some local clubs and individual umpires may not have experienced the round, to have the campaign highlighted alongside representative football is a fantastic and unintended outcome,” said Reeves.

AFL Queensland wishes to congratulate everyone involved in the campaign across the state and acknowledge the commitment of those regions that held an additional recognition weekend for their own umpires after the national round.

The winner of this year’s AFL Queensland “Umpire AFL” Photo Competition was Redcliffe AFC. Their entry showed the spirit of the Umpire Round with players, coaches and support staff all showing their appreciation for their local umpires.
