U16 State Champs kick off in Brisbane

The annual Under 16 State Academy Championships kick off today, Wednesday May 6.

This year’s Championships will see Brisbane South, Brisbane North, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, North Queensland and South Pacific compete in a round robin tournament.

AFL Manager Talent and Academies NSW/QLD, Mark Browning, said the Under 16 State Academy Championships are a key component of the AFL Academy program, which aims to identify and develop the skills of talented young players.

“It is all about providing an opportunity for 150 boys to have an enjoyable, high-level football experience,” said Browning.

“What I particularly love about the Academy championships is that they  allow the boys to fully represent their region, having gone through their local  AFL club Academy  or Summer Training  program.

“ This means that all boys are on equal footing when it comes to being selected  for the Queensland State Under 16 Academy Squad.”

The Queensland Under 16 State Academy Squad will be chosen at the completion of the carnival and will go on to play in the NAB AFL Under 16 Championships in June.
