Sharks take Colts cup

Surfers Sharks claimed the Colts premiership, just edging out Aspley on Saturday, 12.9 (81) – 10.12 (72).

After taking a 27-point lead into half-time, the Sharks found themselves at level pegging with the Hornets at the final change.

Three goals to start off that final quarter gave the Sharks a handy buffer nine minutes into the term, but the Hornets hit back with two of their own, cutting the difference to just five points.

There was only one goal scored after that, by Surfers’ Tyson Mansbridge, and that was all they needed to claim the flag.

Surfers Sharks lost just two games for 2014, leading into the grand final,  just pipping Maroochydore into the decider.

Aspley had a similarly intimidating record through the home and away season, topping the Colts (North) ladder at the end of the regular rounds.

Surfers’ Ethan Mackie won the best on ground medal in the game, after a standout display for the Sharks.

Jonathan Bell was the best for the Hornets, who had proven themselves as one of the top Colts teams through the season.

This was the second grand final that Jason Chantler had lead a Colts team to in as many years,  with the win avenging last season’s runner-up finish.
