Rising Through The Coaching Ranks

Lions Development Coach Murray Davis

A number of current Lions players – including Daniel Merrett, Ben Hudson and Josh Drummond – are often used as key examples of what can be gained from investing in the development of Queensland athletes.

But less attention is paid to the coaches who follow similar paths.

Take Lions Development Coach Murray Davis as an example.

Unlike most AFL coaches, Davis never played at the AFL level. He instead worked his way through the local playing and coaching ranks before eventually earning his opportunity at the Lions.

He is now living proof that Queensland can produce both first-rate players AND coaches.

The Hyundai Brisbane Lions Academy – in conjunction with AFL Queensland – are determined to help facilitate more Queensland coaching success stories by hosting a ‘Coach Education Series’ at the Gabba in 2012.

The sessions are designed to help local club and school coaches further their knowledge and expertise, and build on their own professional development.

Lions Academy Manager Luke Curran said that sharing knowledge among the coaches in the Queensland system can directly result in the greater development of local athletes.

“Coaches play probably the most critical role in the development of players – particularly at the junior level,” Curran said.

“So sharing our knowledge with our local counterparts can only help us produce even more first-class athletes down the track.”

“The ever-expanding nature of AFL coaching also means that more opportunities are becoming available for prospective professional coaches.”

“You just have to look at Murray Davis who was identified by the Lions after plying his trade in the local Leagues for a number of years.”

The first coaching session will be held on Monday 14th May from 5:45pm at the Gabba with special presentations from some senior Brisbane Lions coaches.

Session One is aimed more towards youth-aged coaches (U14-U18) at community club and school levels, and will focus mainly on managing players, areas of development and coaching fundamentals.

Each coaching session costs $30 per person (or $50 for both sessions) and includes exclusive insights from Lions coaches, access to online Academy coaching resources and some refreshments.
