Queensland State Squad Named

Selectors have named an initial 44 man Queensland squad to play Victoria Metro at the Moreton Bay Central Sports Complex on Sunday June 7.

The four match representative fixture sees North Queensland play South Queensland, Queensland take on Victoria Metro, the NEAFL play the Tasmanian State League and the Queensland Women’s team take on Tasmania.

For the first time in many years Queensland players across all competitions were available for selection, including Queensland based NEAFL players.

The final Queensland teamed will be named in the week prior to the match, once the final NEAFL team has been selected.

Chairman of Selectors, Labrador Coach Steve Daniels, said widening selection was the key to a quality representative program.

“It’s important we get the off-field right to support the program,” said Daniels.

“Last year’s loss against the Victoria Amateurs was disappointing, but with the inclusion of the Queensland based NEAFL players our expectations are lot higher this year.

“For the first time in a long time it will be a truly representative Queensland side, with a good mix of proven performers and emerging youth.”

Two-time QAFL Premiership coach David Lake will oversee the Queensland team.

Lake will have his right hand man, Andrew Mellor, as his chief assistant along with Noosa coach, James Gellie, and Wilston Grange assistant coach Matthew Walder.

Western Magpies Football Manager, Peter McClennan, will manage team operations.
