Mayne’s Caleb Brown and Maroochydore’s Jarrod Gale were named as joint winners of the Duncanson Medal as best and fairest for the (QFA) North competition with 19 votes, heading a long list of winners at the Queensland Football Awards at the Gabba tonight.
After a move from half-back to the midfield this year, Brown has become a mercurial ball winner for the Tigers. He has been the go-to man in the contested ball stakes all season, and has been named in the best nine times.
Gale’s biggest asset in 2015 has been his ability to not only win his own footy, but put it on the scoreboard.
The Roos’ livewire kicked 36 goals in the home and away season this year, showing he knows where the big sticks are. Maroochydore’s form this season can be attributed to Gales form in 2015
Yeronga’s Matthew Eagles took out the Todd medal as the QFA South best and fairest with 22 votes.
Eagles has been the pick-up of the year in the QFA South, and has been a revelation at Yeronga in 2015.
Kicking 61 goals this year, he has been one of the top forwards in the competition, but his big, agile frame has also seen him dominate games from the ruck.
When Yeronga needed someone to impose himself on the game, Eagles stood up.
Zilmere’s Mimi Holger claimed consecutive QWAFA best and fairest medals, tying with Jindalee’s Sherie Sales who also polled 21.
The night wasn’t all about the players, with acknowledgement of coaches and volunteers’ contribution to the game.
Coach of the Year awards went to Maroochydore’s Brett Maloney (QFA), Gympie’s Brett Forsyth, (QAFA) and Labrador’s Liam Burke.
Rob Purves from Noosa was named AFL Queensland Volunteer of the Year and the Community Umpire of the Year award went to Ian Graeme.
The Queensland Football Awards celebrate the achievement of the players, officials and volunteers in the Queensland Football Assocation (South and North), Queensland Amateur A and B (South, Central, North) , Queensland Women’s Amateur Football Association and Colts (South and North) competitions.
