The initial squads for this year’s North Queensland versus South Queensland men’s and women’s games have been finalised in preparation for a blockbuster day of rep football on July 2nd at Southport’s Fankhauser Reserve.
It comes after AFL Queensland announced the inaugural NQ Women’s squad last week.
AFL Queensland’s Community Football Manager, Barry Gibson, said all four squads boasted a good mix of youth and experience.
“The depth of the squads will no doubt mean the coaches have some tough decisions to make when the final selection of all four teams occurs,” he said.
“There is a lot of interest building in preparation for the first ever intrastate women’s game and ongoing rivalry in the men’s space. It’s been intriguing to see the different processes the coaching staff have gone through in selecting their squads this year.
“There’s an abundance of talent at the community level across the state, and it’s fantastic to see players being rewarded for their efforts thus far this season with selection in the respective squads.
“The games are five weeks away, so there’s still ample time for players to push their case for final selection, likewise opportunities for players outside the squad to be added.”
The men’s game kicks off at 4pm and will bookend a huge day of footy, with the inaugural women’s game scheduled for 2pm. The Bond University QAFLW local derby between Southport and Bond Uni will get underway at 12pm and will be preceded by the reserves game at 10.15am
Final teams across both men’s and women’s will be announced on Monday June 27th.
