The Redland Bombers face a huge test of character as their QAFL finals hopes go on the line at Victoria Point on Sunday, reports The Redland Times.

The Bombers’ clash with surprise packets Broadbeach will mark the halfway point of the season and D-Day for a club that finished third after the qualifying rounds in 2009.

A 35-point loss to Mt Gravatt last weekend saw the Bombers slip to eighth place on the premiership table and another defeat would see them requiring an improbable seven wins from nine matches over the second half of the year to cement a top five position.

Broadbeach go into the match with a 4-4 record but were outmuscled by the more physically imposing Labrador last weekend.

The young Cats are a lightly-framed outfit that rely heavily on a pacy midfield and quick transitions from defence to generate goals.

The second greatest goalkicker in the 106-year history of the QAFL, Korey Fulton, will spearhead the Cats attack although he was held goalless last weekend.

Fulton has kicked 652 career goals over 11 seasons in the competition, although Adrian Williams was outstanding for Redland last weekend in defence and looms as his likely opponent.

The vagaries of the QAFL draw have seen Redland clash with the powerful Mt Gravatt twice already this season, and lose on both occasions.

They still have two contests against fellow finals aspirants Broadbeach and victories in both will be imperative.

For the first time this season the ever-competitive Bombers failed to generate a big number of scoring opportunities last week, but have the capacity to stretch a Cats defence that is not overly tall.

Adam Mueller and Scott Clouston – one of the Bombers’ best players last weekend – will play important roles, while the coaching staff will be aware that Broadbeach matchwinner Dayne Zorko struggled under a heavy tag in his side’s loss.
