The race for the Ray Hughson Medal for the leading goalkicker in the QAFL tightened considerably in Round 8.

State full-back Kurt Niklaus’ effort to hold NT Thunder star Darren Ewing goalless was a gift to Sharks teammate Cleve Hughes, who has moved to within one goal of the lead.

Hughes has a happy knack of kicking goals irrespective of the pressure applied by quality opponents and his four-goal haul against the Thunder kept up his game average.

Labrador gun Tim Notting moved to within six goals of Ewing with his five-goal haul, but could be in the lead but for some inaccurate kicking over the last fortnight.

The former Brisbane Lion has booted 9.9 against good opposition in that time.

Rd 8 leaders:

36: Darren Ewing (NT Thunder) 0
35: Cleve Hughes (Southport) 4
30: Tim Notting (Labrador) 5
24: Aaron Cornelius (Brisbane) 5
23: Shane Morrison (Mt Gravatt) 0
23: Daniel Dzufer (Redland) 1
21: Adam Mueller (Redland) 1
20: Kent Abey (Morningside) 4
