Darling Downs comes together for Picnic AFL9s

Close to 400 players and spectators flooded Toowoomba’s Queens Park for the biggest and best AFL Darling Downs Picnic AFL9s yet.

A record 14 teams participated in the carnival with players travelling from across the region to take part.

Goodiwindi, Chinchilla, Kingaroy, Brisbane and Toowoomba, who fielded several teams, where all represented in the biggest social AFL9s carnival in the Darling Downs.

Teams played across two divisions, the Max (serious) and Mellow (social), in which Team Jellyfish and The Rooties reigned supreme as their division’s respective champions.

The carnival capped off a significant week in the Darling Downs football calendar following the Brisbane Lions Community camp on February 24-25 and the launch of Club Auskick earlier in the week.

AFL Queensland Game Development and Team Manager – Darling Downs, Jeff Neumann, said the success of the event was due to the participant-drive fun.

“The social aspect shone throughout the carnival with participants from local club football, local community groups, families and some who’ve never played the game, all enjoying their football together,” he said.

“We are extremely pleased by the success of Picnic AFL9s which boasted nearly double the growth from the first iteration in 2019.”

AFL9s is the social and mixed form of Australian Rules football and is a great way to bring families and friends together.
