Brisbane Boys College has won the annual Foundation Cup, beating traditional rivals Churchie at Yeronga.

The match is the customary opening to the AFLQ Independent Schools competition and features a replay of the independent schools grand final from the previous year.

The teams play for a unique piece of silverware – a cup that was once an ice bucket until it was found locked away in a storeroom at the old AFLQ offices at Coorparoo by long-time staff member Murray Bird and converted into a prestigious trophy.

It now sits with BBC for a seventh time after they proved too good for Churchie in the second half and much too efficient in front of goal.

College, coached by Mark McConnacky, won 10-6 (66) to the three-times champions’ 3-14 (32) under coach Jason Wynne-Markham.

The BBC – Churchie clash was a first round match in the 2011 Independent Schools competition that features for the first time a Year 10 team from St.Thomas More College at Sunnybank.

A total of 53 teams will play in the QIS competition in Brisbane, with divisions also running on the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Darling Downs.
