Carbone cracks QAFL Rising Star

By Grant Hitzman

“Vertically challenged” is how Mt Gravatt coach, Brad Pollock, jovially describes Round 9 Rising Star, Todd Carbone.

The nuggety 174cm Vulture played well above his height on the weekend however, delivering on both ends of the field to put an end to Palm Beach’s four game winning streak.

The former Eastern Swans wingman was the creator in the Vultures offence, with clever ball usage across the back flank the difference maker in Mt Gravatt’s tight two-goal win.

“Todd was an extremely important cog on the weekend,” Pollock said.

“He might not be very tall, but he plays creatively and his productivity out of the backline was a big reason we got over the line.”

The 18-year old joined Mt Gravatt in 2013 after relocating from Mackay and has showed maturity beyond his years with consistent and versatile play.

“He played a handful of games in the NEAFL as a 17-year old last year and that gave him the basis to mature quickly,” Pollock said.

“He’s only just turned 18, but he plays well beyond those years – he’s got a very rounded game and his decision making is first-class.

“I can’t remember a game this year where he hasn’t turned up, he is very consistent and very reliable on the field.”

Carbone’s form and success in the QAFL this season is not only because of his hard work and dedication, but the perfect balance he has found between life and footy.

“Todd trains very hard and is an extremely skilled player, but he is also the self proclaimed club social coordinator,” Pollock said.

“He enjoys life and has found balance on and off the field, he is very popular around the club for that reason.”

With SUNS academy success, a taste of NEAFL and consistent form in a competitive QAFL competition, Pollock believes the fledgling defender possesses all the tools to enjoy a successful career.

“He’s a very skilled player that is always looking to improve and long term we plan to move him onto the ball to take him to that next level,” Pollock said.

“And I know that other football opportunities will present themselves, I’m sure of that.”
