Richmond is keen to return to Cairns and secure their first win on Far North Queensland soil.
“We are still a young, developing team and travel provides a great learning experience,” Richmond Captain Chris Newman said.
“Richmond has over 500,000 fans across Australia and games like this give us a chance to play in front of supporters that might not get to many games. We hope to see as many of the Yellow and Black army there as possible.”
Gold Coast SUNS captain Gary Ablett is also looking forward to the match. “The win against Richmond in Cairns was one of our most memorable experiences in our first season.
“It was also pretty special for our North Queensland players like Jarrod Harbrow and Charlie Dixon to come home to Cairns to play AFL football in front of family and friends. It will be great to see a big crowd at Cazalys again this year”, he said.

The AFL, Richmond Football Club and Queensland Government, through Events Queensland formed a partnership to bring Toyota AFL Premiership Season matches to Cairns in 2011, 2012 and 2013. Richmond will play a home match against the Gold Coast SUNS at the stadium in every year of the agreement.
Queensland Minister for Tourism and Major Events Jann Stuckey welcomed the event back to Cairns for its second year.
“The AFL Premiership match in Cairns is a great event for Tropical North Queensland, with the 2011 fixture attracting close to 11,000 people, delivering an economic boost of $3 million to the region,” said Ms Stuckey.
“Events like this are great for the Queensland tourism industry, local businesses and jobs – forming part of the LNP Governments four pillar approach which includes making Queensland Australia’s number one tourist destination,”
Assistant Tourism Minister and Member for Cairns, Gavin King said “Last year’s match was a near sell-out, with local and interstate fans converging on Cazalys Stadium – creating an exciting atmosphere throughout the region.”
“We look forward to welcoming Richmond and the Gold Coast SUNS back to Cairns in July.”
The Federal Government provided the necessary funds to upgrade Cazalys Stadium for 2011, including AFL standard change rooms and media facilities. The Queensland Government, AFL Cairns and local government have provided funding for the lighting upgrade for the twilight match this year.
