Broadbeach Cats have appointed 2010 assistant-coach Matt Angus to replace Adrian Smith as senior coach for 2011.

Angus, who got the nod from the Broadbeach executive last night, will bring a wealth of football experience largely in Western Australia to the position.

He joined the Cats at the start of the 2010 season after moving from Perth, and worked alongside Smith as the Cats finished a disappointing ninth in the QAFL State League.

Previously, he coached the Claremont Colts in the WAFL from 2004–2006 and in 2009 after an earlier stint in charge of the Claremont development squad, winning a total of four premierships at junior and Colts levels.

Along the way he coached a lot of juniors who went on to become AFL players, including Harry O’Brien (Collingwood) , Beau Wilkes (West Coast), Mitch Morton (Richmond), Jarryd Morton (Hawthorn), Nathan Krakouer (Port Adelaide/ Gold Coast) , Ryan Brabazon (Sydney Swans), Alan Toovey (Collingwood), Eric Mackenzie (West Coast), Liam Bedford (West Coast), Nat Fyfe (Freemantle), Travis Colyer (Essendon), Gerrick Weedon (West Coast), Lewis Broome (West Coast and Ryan Neates (West Coast).

In a statement issued by Broadbeach Football Club today, Angus said he was both excited and anxious about leading the Cats into 2011.

“I am looking forward to the challenge ahead,” he said.

“There is plenty of talent already at Broadbeach and an outstanding number of younger players coming through. With the addition of Jason Eagle and a few other key positional players that we are hoping to secure in the near future and a commitment to a strong pre-season, I can see the Club making significant improvement in 2011.

“Changes are certainly underway at the club and there are exciting times ahead both an on off the field”, Angus said.

While his primary focus will be the senior playing group, the Cats say Angus is also keen to assist and use his vast experience in the development of the Broadbeach junior program.

The club is confident he will have plenty to work with in this area, with the Cats having produced five State players at State U16 and U18 level in 2010.

These included U16 Queensland captain Andrew Boston and Queensland U18 captain and recent Gold Coast AFL signing Joel Wilkinson.
