Auskick is well and truly underway in Mackay for the 2012 season, with school and club Auskick numbers soaring past previous years. Auskicker’s have featured in a number of our Senior fixtures, playing in curtain raiser and half time  matches throughout Mackay and the Whitsundays.

Sarina, Alligator Creek and Northern Beaches Magpies juniors were involved in an Auskick and U9s match prior to the Bakers Creek vs. NB Magpies Seniors. The Whitsunday Sea Eagles club Auskick also attracted a promising number of new players at their sign on last Friday night. The former ‘Auskick Centre of the Year’ drew close to 100 keen participants to the first Auskick night of the season.

In what was a great show of support for a young member of the Mackay community, a Charity Match was held for Ryan Scown last Sunday. Ryan was involved in a serious car accident 1 month ago and the entire Mackay community has bound together to raise money for Ryan and the Scown family who are long-standing members of Mackay AFL.

The Auskicker’s turned out with their families to put on an entertaining display prior to the Senior Match between Eastern Swans and NB Magpies (Ryan has played for both teams).

This week showcases a great tradition for AFL Mackay, with the inaugural City vs. Country ANZAC DAY clash at Harrup Park. The event is held in honour of our past and present service men and women, and this year we are fortunate to have two Naval Ships and crew attend the prestigious event.

The half time entertainment will include Auskick and U9s matches on the main field in front of family, friends and an expected crowd of up to 1,500 spectators.

It’s a great opportunity for the youngsters to experience the thrill of playing on the big stage like the senior players that many of our future AFL junior look up to in awe.
