VULTURES ARE CIRCLING

Mt Gravatt are taking plenty of confidence out of last week’s big win into their tricky assignment at Aspley tomorrow.

Mt Gravatt are determined to build on their hugely impressive win at Labrador last weekend when they travel to Aspley tomorrow.

The Vultures suddenly have the top sides looking over their shoulder at them, despite having yet to cement a finals berth.

The blue and whites cannot afford any slip ups from here despite their super win last Sunday, ans in-form co-captain Nathan Gilliland is well aware.

“To beat the second team on the ladder gives us confidence but we have to make sure we back that up against Aspley,” he said. “This is just as a big a game as last week was for us.”

Aspley have won two of their last four matches and been most competitive in each, building a rock-solid defence around a number of experienced players led by former Lion Robert Copeland.

The Vultures own experienced campaigners in co-captain Josh Vearing, Darryl White, Tom Tarrant and Ash Evans made a huge difference last week, and the Vultures can only get better if they maintain the stability that was missing over the first half of the season.

Mt Gravatt won last week despite the absence of head coach David Lake, who was on duty in Sydney in his role as coach of the South Pacific at the nab national under 16 championships.

Assistant coach Nev Miller took over Vultures senior duties and will do so again at Graham Road.

“Nev was really good – he left it up to the players to manage some things and he provided the guidance,” Gilliland said of the game at Labrador. “Everyone stood up and took responsibility.”

Talented utility Billy Cleary is available this week after serving a week’s suspension, while Vearing pulled up well after his first game in almost two months from a broken wrist.

Midfielders Evans, Dean Page and Aiden Pratt were all outstanding last week, and with Rory Lake and Mick Hamill doing their bit, the Vultures suddenly have an embarrassment of riches with their onball brigade.
