They’ll go into Round 1 as the underdogs, facing off against reigning premiers Morningside, but for Palm Beach Currumbin coach Russell Moloney it’s a challenge the team is up for.
“We’ll find out exactly where we are at coming up against the reigning premiers. It’s a real test for us,” he said.
“We’ll take them on as favourites, we’ll go in as the underdogs but I’m happy with that.
“We’re quietly confident. We’ve had a strong and very enthusiastic preseason.”
The Lions come into season 2021 as a new look outfit with a new focus.
“We’ve had a big change of personnel, lots of retirements and some who’ve moved on,” said Moloney.
“We’ve got a few new recruits and we’ll be playing a lot of the younger boys. That’s what we’re concentrating on this year, those younger boys getting developed and coming through.”
The team is buoyed by the return of Steven Thynne, who resumes captain duties.
“He’s had a bad run of injuries over the past few years but he seems to be over them now. He’ll play round one as a defender and looks to be in good shape,” said Moloney.
“Jon Croad in the ruck is also looking good. He’s a key ruckman for us, he’s been training really well and looks like he’s ready to take the season by storm.
“It’s great to have young Riley Buckland back from the Academy. He’s been training the house down over summer. He had a few little injuries but he’s back up and running now and I’m really keen to see what we can do.”
Moloney attests to the vibe amongst his coaching colleagues, with the 2021 season hard to predict.
“It’s a really hard one. A lot of the clubs last year had NEAFL boys. It’s really open this year and you just can’t predict who’s strong and who’s not until we’re all up and playing,” he said.
“Everyone is in the same boat – with practice match washouts and COVID, we’re all a little bit behind the eight ball.
“I’m looking forward to getting the season underway.”
