QWAFL Round 9 Preview

Zillmere vs Coorparoo
8:00pm Friday,  O’Callaghan Park Zillmere

The Eagles and Navy Roos have met twice this season, Zillmere winning both by 9 and 87 points, respectively.

Zillmere were grittier than an unwashed salad mix in their 10-point win over Grange last week. It was a tough match for the Eagles, and while they still need to work on their four-quarter effort they showed a toughness we like.

As for Coorparoo, it’s about small wins this season and they can take heart in last week’s final quarter against Coolangatta last week. They outscored the ladder leaders by a goal; a small but significant effort for a team that has struggled all year.

Zillmere should win this comfortably, but if Coorparoo can pick up where they left off last week they can make it tough for the home side … and that’s the match we want to see.

Zillmere by 30-points.

Coolangatta vs. University of Queensland

2:30pm Saturday, Bill Godfrey Oval, Burleigh

We have been itching for a boilover for weeks now and if it’s going to happen this week, it’s going to be this match.

Cooly accounted for the Red Lioness’s by a comfortable 31-points in Round 3, but the Uni crew just get that little bit tighter each week; last week’s 18-point loss to Yeronga case in point.

How close they can get to Cooly will well and truly show them have far they have come, and how far they need to go to be a real contender in this competition.

In comparison, the Bluebirds have a greater spread of stars and will enjoy a second week running of playing on the coast.

They won’t be expecting an easy win, and it won’t be … but Coolangatta will win by at least 15 points.

Wilston Grange Vs. Yeronga

4:45pm Bendigo Bank Oval, Wilston Grange

Though the ladder and win-loss stat may not show it, Wilston Grange has had a ripping three weeks.

They followed up a win over Coorparoo with two close, tough matches against UQ and Zillmere.

The growth has been dramatic and while we don’t think they can match it against Yeronga, they deserve credit for what they’ve achieved in a relatively small amount of time.

Yeronga was slow out of the blocks against UQ last week, something they don’t want to be against the plucky Gorillas, who have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain.

If Wilston Grange can somehow manage to contain Emily Bates, they might be in with a chance.

Yeronga By 25.
