Former Morningside ace and now North Melbourne utility Gavin Urquhart’s community spirit attracted plenty of attention in Melbourne last week.
Urquhart had been proudly sporting an ‘afro’ over the previous seven months, but it all disappeared for a wonderful cause.
In support of the World’s Greatest Shave, the Number 14 said goodbye to his long locks in a bid to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
“It’s a great cause. There’s probably not enough awareness about the actual cancer. The more awareness we can raise and money we can raise the better research that can be done,” Urquhart said.
Leukaemia sufferer Jyle Fuller was given the chance to hold the clippers as Urquhart’s teammates watched on.
A loyal North Melbourne supporter, Jyle was diagnosed in May last year and has undergone intense chemotherapy at the Royal Children’s Hospital since.
“I wouldn’t think I’d ever shave an AFL player’s head. It was fun,” Jyle said.
Money raised from the World’s Greatest Shave is used by the Leukaemia Foundation to fund services to support patients and families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.
All their services are free and the money raised also funds blood cancer research to find better treatments and cures
