Women’s Exhibition Squads Named

AFL Queensland has named squads for the Women’s Exhibition Match to be played as a curtain closer to the Brisbane Lions vs. Gold Coast SUNS QClash11 at the Gabba on Saturday April 16.

It is the sixth of the AFL Women’s Exhibition Series games being played around the country in the lead-up to the introduction of a national AFL women’s competition in 2017.

The match gives fans an opportunity to see the best female footballers from the AFL Queensland Talent Academy compete in the Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast SUNS colours.

AFL Queensland Female High Performance Manager Craig Starcevich said the game is the culmination of the five month Summer Academy Program geared towards preparing players for the national competition.

“Our depth of talent has grown considerably over the past 12 months as more players vie for positions on AFL club lists,” said Starcevich.

“The squads have members from last year’s Queensland Women’s State Team, graduates from the Youth Girls Academy and athletes identified at February’s Female Talent Search; and includes nine players who have competed at National Exhibition Game level with Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs.”

The Brisbane Lions vs. Gold Coast SUNS Women’s Exhibition match commences at 8:00pm after post match kick-to-kick.

Fans attending the women’s match only can enter free via Gate 2 once the main game has finished.
