EX-QAFL COMBATANTS FIRE UP

Thursday 24 February 2011

Two former QAFL combatants found themselves before the Tribunal this week on the eve of the NTFL finals series.

Aspley recruit Dan Roy, who has been in excellent touch for Southern Districts, had his season almost certainly ended up being suspended for three weeks for striking Tiwi Bomber Dion Munkara.

Southern Districts meet Waratah in the NTFL elimination final this weekend, while the Bombers take on Wanderers in the qualifying final.

The ever-powerful St Mary’s finished on top of the ladder and earned the week’s rest.

Former NT Thunder coach Michael McLean is in charge of Southern Districts, who are seeking their first flag since 2007.

Roy (pictured courtesy NT News) was offered a two-week penalty for striking but opted to fight the severity of the sentence, which backfired when he was given the three-week ban.

Munkara told the Tribunal that Roy “hit me very hard and it still hurts me” despite conceding he had been too high with a tackle on Roy that led to the incident, reports the NT News.

Thunder star Jarred Ilett was in top form for St Mary’s in a big win over Palmerston last week in a good pointer to the coming NEAFL season, while ex-Broadbeach big man Mitch Andrews kicked six goals for the NTFL powerhouse.
