Tuesday Talking Points

Draft Night

Tonight’s the night. An expected 85 people will be given a chance to play out their AFL dream if their name is called out by one of the 18 clubs at the NAB AFL Draft in Adelaide. With at least five Queenslanders a big chance of getting picked up tonight, and even more in the Rookie Draft on Friday, some of our boys are about to have their name up in lights.

Koenen is Half Blue

Bre Koenen has capped of her stellar year by being presented with the University of Queensland Half Blue award. She became the club’s first ever female recipient of the award due to her work on and off the field, which included Queensland Women’s team selection, winning the clubs QWAFL Best and Fairest, as well as her work as a sports trainer for the clubs QAFA (B) and QWAFA squads. Well done, Bre!

Bond University

Speaking of awards, it wasn’t just on field where Bond University went back-to-back. They were awarded with the “Best Sporting Moment” award at Bond University for a second consecutive year after winning the 2015 QAFA (A) premiership. It’s been a couple of very big years for the boys in blue and yellow; it will be intriguing to watch how they go in the QFA South next year.

Bear leading the Pumas

Most people are used to seeing Adrian Wallin kicking bags of goals for Springwood, but his role for 2016 has a whole different look about it. Instead of kicking the goals, Wallin will be trying to construct them, after taking over as senior coach for the 2016 season. Don’t expect too much of a transition period – Bear knows how the system works, and what makes Springwood so successful, so will be straight to business.

Surfers back in full swing

It’s only late November, but Surfers have hit the ground running as they begin to prepare for season 2016. The red and blue had over 40 blokes in the paddock last week for their first sessions of the pre-season, as they strive for a finals berth.

They also announced the finalization of their coaching panel for 2016 which is as follows:

Senior Coach – Peter Young

Senior Assistant/ Development Coach – Shannan Tate

Midfield Coach – Fraser Pope

Defensive Coach – Jess Haberfield

Reserves Coach – Tim Bradbury

Chairman of Selectors – Craig Jarman

Under 17s Coaches – Gavin Faulkner & Grant Bons
