The AFL Queensland Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships take place at Leyshon Park, Yeronga from today, Thursday October 20 to Sunday October 23.
Twelve teams will compete across three divisions, with Papua New Guinea entering the carnival for the first time.
Division 1: Brisbane South, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Darling Downs.
Division 2: Brisbane North, Capricornia, Northern Rivers and Cairns.
Division 3: Wide Bay, Mackay, Townsville and Papua New Guinea.
Divisional matches are fixtured from Thursday to Saturday, with finals and relegation games on Sunday.
The Brisbane Lions Women’s Team will feature in a special presentation to teams on Saturday afternoon.
AFL Queensland Female High Performance Manager Craig Starcevich said excitement was high ahead of the four day event.
“The introduction of the AFL Women’s League in 2017 has been a game changer for female football and there is a real buzz heading into the carnival,” said Starcevich.
“The young women playing in these championships can now aspire to play at the highest level of Australian Football.
“Ten of the players picked by the Brisbane Lions in last week’s NAB AFL Women’s Draft, along with priority pick Emma Zielke and Marquee player Tayla Harris, have come through the Queensland Talent Pathway and competed at the Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships.
“That’s a great indication of the depth of talent we have in Queensland and we are looking forward to discovering the next crop of home-grown stars.”
The event is proudly supported major event partner Hyundai and the Queensland Government.
Hyundai has been the Platinum Partner of the Brisbane Lions since 2010 and have recently announced their extension of the relationship to be Major Partner of the of the Lions’ Women’s Team as well as extending their support of the female talent pathway which includes the introduction of a Female Lions Academy and sponsoring our AFL Queensland Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships
Martin Him, General Manager – Hyundai Northern Region, said that as a Platinum Partner of the Club since 2010, they were excited to extend the relationship with the Brisbane Lions and to be part of this revolution in women’s sport.
“In addition to the Major Partnership of the Women’s Team, our involvement extends to supporting the female talent pathway which includes the introduction of a Female Lions Academy and sponsoring the Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships,” Him said.

Hyundai Help for Kids have been our Brisbane Lions Academy Major Partner for the junior boys’ pathway and will extend their support to developing the new girls Academy. This development program will run from November to February and will be officially launched later in the year.
The Under 17 Youth Girls State Championships are part of a calendar of events to celebrate the 150 Year anniversary of Queensland football, which is supported by the Queensland Government through the Department of Sport and Recreation.
The carnival kicks off at 1:00pm Thursday.
