2019 Garbutt Magpies Cup

Next Friday the Garbutt Magpies will host their annual Garbutt Magpies Cup, an educational, cultural and sporting event like no other.

Thirteen primary schools from across far North Queensland will compete in the event, held at the Murray Complex in Annandale.

Now in it’s sixth year, the competition was established to promote cultural awareness in the community and engage more local youth in AFL participation.

Open to all year five and six students, of both sexes and from all cultural backgrounds, the cup uses sport as a vehicle to promote messages of resilience, strength and connectedness to kids on the cusp of adolescence.

In the lead up to the event Aboriginal Elders will be visiting local participating schools across the region, presenting players with their shirts and delivering a mentoring session.

Garbutt Magpies Committee Member, Randall Ross, said the club is proud of the leadership role they play for the local community.

“Since the 1950’s the Garbutt Magpies Sporting Club has been an important part of the Garbutt community,” Mr Ross said.

“We are more than just a sporting club, we are a second family for our local kids and their families.

“Our coaches and those involved in the club are genuine mentors and role models,” he added.

“The Garbutt Magpies Cup is a wonderful way for elders to connect with local kids and teach some important life lessons, all whilst enjoying a good old game of footy.”

The round-robin competition will conclude at 2.00pm with one team taking home the prestigious cup for the year.
