The 2017 NAB AFL Women’s Under-18 Championships will commence today, Friday, May 12 in Adelaide.
A new Championships format will see matches played in across two rounds over eight weeks in four states.
All states and territories will compete in Round One with players from the Northern Territory, South Australia and Tasmania to form an Allies team to play in Round Two.
AFL Head of Female Football Josh Vanderloo said the Championships will showcase the best young talent ahead of the 2017 NAB AFL Women’s Draft.
“All the clubs will be watching the matches with interest as they plan their 2018 playing lists. Fourteen players from the 2016 Championships played in the inaugural AFLW season this year and I anticipate there will be more players drafted later this year,” Mr Vanderloo said.
“The 2017-18 NAB AFL Women’s Academy squad will also be selected from the Championships matches.
“The new format will mean more matches for players to test themselves against the best across the country while experiencing travel and education programs that prepare them for football at the highest level.”
Matches will be streamed live on the AFL Women’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCui2LJ0N-Zi7Uw_sHyE5kgQ
Scores will be posted on afl.com.au/womens and twitter: @AFLFemale / @AFLWomens
