Youth Girls Champs kick off in Melbourne

The  2016 Youth Girls National Championships commence today, Monday, May 2 in Melbourne.

The championships are the pinnacle competition for young female footballers aged between 15-18 years.

Media is invited to attend the launch and details are as follows:

Matches will be played over four days at Olympic Park Oval (Collingwood FC), Trevor Baker Oval (Sandringham), City Oval (Coburg) and Punt Road Oval (Richmond FC).

There are nine teams competing in two pools;

Pool A: Western Australia, Vic Metro, Vic Country, Queensland

Pool B: New South Wales/ACT, South Australia, Northern Territory, Tasmania, Woomeras (Indigenous team).

The Pool A final will be played on Friday May 6 at 5.20pm prior to Richmond v Hawthorn at the MCG.

At the conclusion of the carnival the Championships Fairest and Best and the Under-18 All-Australian squad will be named.

In 2015 there were 330 youth girls teams across Australia. Total female participation was 318,880, which represents 25 per cent of all Australian football participants.
