Women’s State Champs This Weekend

The 2012 Kooga AFL Queensland Women’s State Championships will commence at Cazaly’s Stadium Cairns tomorrow, Friday May 4.

Cairns, South East Queensland (SEQ) and Papua New Guinea (PNG) will vie for the State title in a round robin style carnival that will conclude on Sunday May 6, with PNG entering the competition for the first time.

AFL Queensland Female Programs Manager Julia Price said that the championships played a key role in the State’s female pathway program.

“The Kooga AFLQ Women’s State Championships provide the girls with an opportunity to experience a higher level of competition and really challenge themselves in that environment,” said Price.

“It’s also a wonderful opportunity to share their love of AFL with girls from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds.”

Price said that AFL Queensland was thrilled at the inclusion of a PNG team and the ongoing benefits it would provide to the State program.

“PNG are a welcome and exciting addition to the Championships,” she said.

“Not only will they enhance the competition with their unique style of play, Queensland will benefit in future from the eligibility of the PNG players for State representative selection.”

A Queensland Development Squad will be selected at the completion of the Championships to compete against NSW and ACT in Brisbane this September.
