Umpiring in Queensland

Back to Umpiring Hub

Umpires play an important role in AFL – without Umpires, there is no game!

Umpiring is a fantastic way to get involved with AFL whilst keeping fit, developing people skills, friendships and earning money.

With AFL in Queensland growing at a rapid rate, there are always plenty of opportunities across the state for people to get involved in AFL & Umpiring and earn money at the same time.

You will be appointed to a match within your local competition. Games are held at various times throughout the weekend, so there are always plenty of opportunities to Umpire. You will be provided with training and coaching; so you won’t be dropped in at the deep end!

There are many ways to get involved. Umpiring has three disciplines – Field, Boundary and Goal. Although separate in skills and abilities, these three disciplines of Umpires work together to ensure the match is played safely and fairly.

Field: Field Umpires officiate, and have full control of a match. These Umpires continually move across a football field with the play and position themselves at all times so they can clearly observe play. Field Umpires officiate the play in line with the Laws of the Game and apply them within the spirit of the laws.

Boundary: Boundary Umpires move along the boundary of the football field, judge whether the ball is out of bounds (or out of bounds on the full) and return the ball to play through a boundary throw in. Boundary Umpires also assist the Goal Umpires in determining scoring shots.

Goal: Goal Umpires are positioned between the goal posts at each end of the field. They are responsible for judging whether a goal or behind has been scored, signalling that a score has been made and recording the score.

Umpiring is a great way to improve your fitness. It is also a great way to improve your bank balance.

Umpiring rates in Queensland vary from $35 dollars in the underage competition to over $130 for a Senior Field Umpiring role. As you make your way up the Umpiring ranks your ability to earn more and more increases.

Umpiring can build your confidence, help you make important decisions under pressure and improve your interpersonal and communication skills. All skills you can use in other areas of your life.

Just looking to get involved with Australian Football without becoming an elite umpire? No problems! There are plenty of opportunities throughout Queensland for those umpires who would just like to have a run around on the weekend, earn some extra money and be involved with Australia’s game. Umpiring works around your work and life commitments.

Umpiring is a great way to stay active, get paid and have fun.

Are you fit, dedicated, motivated and hard-working? If you want to officiate some amazing football, then there are pathways in place to help you get to the top.
