New recruits allocated two of Brisbane Lions most famous guernsey numbers

Lions recruits Joe Daniher and Nakia Cockatoo have been handed two of Brisbane’s most famous numbers for the 2021 season.

Joe Daniher will wear the most famous number in Brisbane Lions history when he pulls on the number 3 jumper worn by club legend Michael Voss during Brisbane’s flag dynasty.

Voss wore the number for 283 games across a stellar career that also included the 1996 Brownlow medal.

Daniher, who crossed from Essendon as a free agent to boost the Lions’ forward line in 2021 inherited the number from the retired Allen Christensen who wore it in 68 games for the Lions.

Daniher said he was excited about the next chapter of his AFL career and is looking forward to playing for the Brisbane Lions.

Fellow new recruit and former Cat Nakia Cockatoo will don the number 12 that Jason Akermains wore in his 210 games at the club.

Akermanis won a Brownlow and three premierships while wearing the number. He shares the game’s record in the number with another club great, Fitzroy’s Michael Conlon.

Cockatoo inherits the number from ruckman Stefan Martin, who has crossed to the Western Bulldogs.
