Tuesday Talking Points

King of the North

Matt Walsh is a name well known around the football traps in Cairns, and for good reason. On Saturday, the sharp shooter put goal 1000 through the big sticks. No, I didn’t accidentally put an extra zero on the end of that, goal 1000. The best thing about it though? Every teammate and spectator getting around him. Check it out below.

Draft Camp

Following impressive NAB AFL Under 18 Championship and TAC Cup campaigns, five Queensland State Academy members have been invited to the NAB AFL Draft Combine. Ben Keays, Mabior Chol, Eric Hipwood, Corey Wagner and Reuben William will all head to Etihad Stadium in October for four days of testing in front of every AFL club, to show that they have what it takes to play at the elite level. While it’s no guarantee of being drafted, it’s a very important step in the right direction for the boys.

Like clockwork

Matt Thompson notched up senior game 100 on Saturday for the Western Magpies in their game against Wilston Grange, and he did it in style. In a low scoring affair, and after his team was held scoreless in the first quarter, Thompson kicked two crucial second quarter goals to swing momentum the Magpies way, before helping his team over the line in a thriller. Well played, Clock.

14 for O’Shea

There’s kicking a bag, there’s having a day out up forward, and then there is Luke O’Shea’s performance on the weekend for Springwood. He finished with a lazy 14 goals next to his name in their win over Coolangata-Tweed. I guess you could say he played his role pretty well.

No more wondering

Now that the wash out round has been played, we are all square on the ladder, and the “game in hand” talk is out the window. I tell you what, it makes for some very interesting reading. Take the QAFL for example; after the Western Magpies got up over Wilston Grange on Saturday, they now sit equal second with Morningside, and is a game clear of forth. Things are really heating up now!
