SUNS OUT FOR SUNFIRE TRAINING

Gold Coast Suns players Joel Wilkinson and Dion Prestia lend starpower to Sunfire Academy training.

There was no shortage of talented help on hand for the second Sunfire Academy training session at Yeronga.

Gold Coast Suns players Joel Wilkinson and Dion Prestia lent star power to the session while Sunfire senior players Heidi Thompson, Emma Zielke and Kate Lutkins showed the young Academy girls plenty of skill and flair.

Yeronga Women’s’ player Emily Wastle was charged with running the squad through their paces – with kicking, marking and handball top of the agenda – followed by a modified game to practice their skills.

Run by AFL Queensland and supported by the Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions, the Sunfire Academy aims to fast track the skills of talented young female footballers (aged 11 & 12) in a fun and friendly environment.

32 girls from Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast were selected for the Academy based on performances at the Sunfire Superstars Carnival night in September.

The star-studded training session also served as a jumper presentation, with the girls “drafted” into Suns and Lions teams based on their region.
