AFL Queensland has announced the 2023 South Queensland (SQ) men’s and women’s squads who are set to face off against North Queensland (NQ) in the annual intrastate representative clash in Cairns next month.
An initial list of 61 men hailing from Darling Downs, Hervey Bay, South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales have been selected with the final team of 22 players to be announced closer to the match.
The South Queensland Men’s Head Coach Andrew Cadzow said he was confident in the ability of his initial squad.
“Rep footy is all about the player. It is a reward and recognition of your ability as a very good player. It takes courage and commitment to play rep footy,” he said.
“Having buy in from the best 50ish players in South Queensland will bring together a terrific squad and we will travel with confidence.”
Travelling and competing alongside the South Queensland Men’s squad will be 53 of South Queensland’s best female players.
South Queensland Female Head Coach Jaimie Stanton said the squad had a good mix of experienced and emerging talent.
“We have a good number of girls returning from last year’s team,” she said.
“Of the girls that aren’t returning, seven of them have moved up into the QAFLW competition which is a great accomplishment for the program.
“The squad is a combination of up-and-coming talent and experienced players who have played at a QFAW or QAFLW level.”
Training for both squads will kick off next Wednesday May 31 and will continue weekly up until the Cairns clash.
The North Queensland Men’s and Women’s squads will be announced next Tuesday following the AFL Cairns All Stars v Indigenous/South Pacific Rep game this coming weekend.
