Smith enters calculations: Syd Guildford Trophy Round 11

By Ant Wingard

Mt Gravatt skipper Andrew Smith has soared into Syd Guildford Trophy calculations after a best on ground performance in the Vultures’ season defining one-point win over Broadbeach in Round 11.

Smith, just a fortnight removed from claiming the Zane Taylor Medal in the QAFL’s representative showdown with the Adelaide Footy League, was instrumental in guiding the Vultures to an unlikely victory over the Cats at Dittmer Park.

The 70-game blue and white veteran claimed a game-high eight votes in the win to move him into equal fifth in the overall standings.

Broadbeach’s Ben Hancock (seven votes) closely trailed Smith in the voting while milestone midfielder Frazer Neate (six) also earned the praise of both coaches.

The trio were rounded out by Vulture Michael Hamill (three) and Cats trio Joel Newman (also three), Jackson Fisher (two) and Blake Erickson (one).

One of Sandgate’s most promising young talents has produced a clean sweep of the Syd Guildford voting in the Hawks’ breakthrough win over arch rivals Wilston Grange as Tahj Abberley claimed the perfect ten votes.

Abberley, a Queensland state Under 17 talent who is in his debut season of QAFL football, rose to the occasion against the Gorillas as Sandgate claimed their first win of the season.

Grange midfielder Daniel Farry (six) also received votes from both coaches among a plethora of other Sandgate vote getters including Max Homer (four), Ben Hogan and Luke Bradford (both three).

Palm Beach Currumbin dominated the voting in their top of the table showdown with Morningside at Jack Esplen Oval with a host of Lions.

None were better than Tom Thynne who received a game-high nine votes from the coaches to extend his lead to 43 at the top of the Syd Guildford Trophy leader board.

Thynne was dynamic once again in the win and was duly rewarded for his performances alongside Jesse Derrick (six), Angus Monroe (five) Mitch Johnson (three) and Dylan Troutman (one) while Panthers ruckman Brad Hodge came away with a team-high five votes.
