Sandgate rewards participation

By Phoebe Keogh

More kids are getting involved with footy at Sandgate’s JAFC with NAB AFL Auskick numbers up on 2013.

Auskick Coordinator Gayle Munkley credits some of this success to the participation-based raffle they have run from week 1, which encourages kids to come weekly and keep having fun with footy.

A raffle ticket was allocated to every child who played each week.  Additional raffle tickets were given to every mum, dad or a friend that each player brought along.

Gayle explained that the raffle is unique as tickets are acquired through participation, not payment.

“The raffle is something totally different as it is based on participation,” she said.

Prizes include a Hawks Jersey signed by Brisbane Lions rookie Isaac Conway (who played for the club as a junior), an iPod donated by McDonalds Bracken Ridge and a family meal voucher from Sandgate Hawks Sporting Club.

Munkley also said that senior Hawks players who have been helping out with coaching the kids have contributed to the success of Auskick.

“The more coaches we have for the groups on a Saturday morning, the more engaging for the kids.”

Munkley said that from Auskick, nearly every player who was age applicable had transferred over to club football with Sandgate and a record 18 young girls had registered with Auskick.

The raffle will be drawn at the end of the program along with the presentation of medals.

Sandgate’s JAFC have taken a new approach to encourage participation and it is paying off. In this program, every Auskicker is a winner.
