Queenslanders announced in national Woomeras and Medleys squads

The AFL has announced squads for Sunday’s match between the Woomeras and Medleys, featuring the country’s most promising Indigenous and multicultural under-16 girls footballers. Six girls from Queensland have been named in the national squads representing the best Indigenous and multicultural talent.

Players from across the country will come together to form the Indigenous side, the Woomeras, and the multicultural team, the Medleys. Three Queensland players have been selected for the U16 Woomeras, and three have been selected for the U16 Medleys.

The two teams will meet at Geelong’s GMHBA Stadium on Sunday June 5. The match will follow an AFLW Futures match, in a fantastic double-header that will showcase the country’s best young football talent.

The AFL Futures match will commence at 10:30am, ahead of the Woomeras v Medleys clash at 12:30pm.

Selection in the Woomeras and Medleys programs provides players access to a national online mentoring program to improve their leadership and football skills, which will take place from now until December.

AFL National Diversity Talent Manager, Paul Vandenbergh, said the Woomeras and Medleys programs provided a great opportunity for young women to experience football in an elite environment and develop their skills on and off the field.

“We are incredibly excited to be running these programs once again as we have seen previously how beneficial they have been for many young multicultural and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women around the country,” Mr Vandenbergh said.

“The Woomeras and Medleys programs not only provide a platform for players to showcase their great talents, but also provide an opportunity for players to develop leadership skills which they can take back to their respective communities and football clubs.”

The Woomeras will be coached by former West Coast and Fremantle AFLW player Cassie Davidson, who will be assisted by Melbourne AFLW midfielder Krstel Petrevski and Hawthorn VFLW on-baller Jordan Mifsud.

Amanda Robertson has been named head coach of the Medleys, with Hawthorn AFLW signing Akec Makur Chuot, GWS Giants midfielder Haneen Zreika and Sabrin Nyawela also part of the coaching panel.

How to watch: A live stream of the Woomeras v Medleys match will be available at www.womens.afl/talent-pathway/u18s.
