Tigers and Kings ready to battle for QFA Division 1 Hart Sport cup Premiership rights
The 2024 QFA Division 1 HART Sport Cup season culminates this Saturday with a thrilling Grand Final matchup between two powerhouse clubs: Mayne and Coorparoo, at the Southpine Sports Complex.
As Mayne celebrates its centenary in 2024 and Coorparoo prepares for elevation into the QAFL in 2025, Saturday’s Grand promises to be a historic event for both teams.
Mayne enters the game as the favourite after finishing the season as Minor Premiers and defeating Coorparoo in the Qualifying Final two weeks ago. Although Mayne hasn’t featured in the Grand Final since 2020, nine players from the squad will be looking to redeem themselves after their loss to Noosa in that year’s Grand Final.
Coorparoo, on the other hand, is making its third consecutive Grand Final appearance and boasts a wealth of experience across the team. Despite recent injury setbacks, including the loss of Matt Suckling in the Preliminary Final, Coorparoo’s depth is evident. The Kings have made just one change for Saturday, bringing ruckman Dylan Reid in to replace the injured Suckling.
Mayne has also made a single change to the Qualifying Final side who defeated Coorparoo by 46 points, with Sam Paterson coming in for Daniel Athanasellis.
Whilst there is a wealth of experience within the Kings lineup, there is plenty of youth injecting pace and excitement into their game. 17-year-olds Tyan Prindable and Oscar Barry were among the best on ground in the Preliminary Final and have provided plenty of run and drive through the centre of the ground, whilst 18 year old Kyah Moncur has presented a strong forward target booting 15 goals from his eight games since joining the club.
Jaiden Fowler has also been in sensational form for the Kings, with the Redcliffe recruit proving to be a crucial part of their midfield group.
For Mayne the key threat lies in the forward duo of Zach Quin and Ryan Doolan who booted nine goals between them in the Qualifying Final, and have 140 goals. Shutting down at least one of these two on Saturday will go a long way towards Coorparoo knocking off the minor premiers.
Will Brohm has also been impressive across recent weeks, and was a key player in the Qualifying Final victory. Brohm has been a sensational pickup for the Tigers this year, with the former Glenorchy (TSL) product earning a South Queensland representative jumper in June and presenting as one of the premier players in the competition.
The South Pine Sports Complex offers a neutral venue with an expansive field that will allow both teams to showcase their running game. Expect the team that manages to control the play on the outside to emerge victorious. Additionally, with scorching temperatures expected on Saturday, the ability to handle the heat could prove decisive.
