Head-to-head at Bond University Oval: Played 2 – Southport won 2
Last time they met: 30 July 2022 (Preliminary Final) – Southport 7.4 (46) d Bond University 2.4 (16) at Bond University Oval

The 2023 Bond University QAFLW is merely three weeks old and yet there is already a heavyweight title bout feel about Southport’s visit to The Canal.

Both Bond and Southport have recently and enviably watched their percentage plummet below 1000, a height reached largely through quick ball movement and rapid support play allowing their forwards to camp inside the front 50.

However, while Southport has also made one change to last week’s side, and even that caused only by Lily McDonald moving interstate, Suns Academy commitments have forced the Bull Sharks into nine changes. Bond’s opening round side contained six state league debutantes; they top that this week with seven.

Bond University Australian Football Scholarship holder Jemma Blair has played for Tasmania Devils in the Victorian Futures League and for North Melbourne in the VFLW. Issy Lowe is rewarded for her 8 goals in Reserve Grade last week between Burleigh U17s appearances; and promotions are also in order for ex-Coolangatta midfielder Sunny Hewett and New South Wales Over 40s representative Kylie McMullen.

Then there’s the familiar multi-sport raid for which Bond is famous with netballer Tobi Chapman, track sprinter Annalise Daniel, and rugby sevens’ Tshinta Kendall all donning the yellow and blue.

Meanwhile, the Great White Sharks (look at Southport’s logo; it’s definitely a great white) can include former Richmond and Port Melbourne player Maddy Baldwin into a settled line-up and possibly take some comfort in the knowledge that none of the three previous Shark Stoushes have been won by the home team.

WILSTON GRANGE v UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
Saturday 6 May 2023, 2:00pm
iiNergy Oval, Stafford

Head-to-head: Played 21 – University of Queensland won 14; Wilston Grange won 7
Head-to-head at iiNergy Oval: Played 9 – University of Queensland won 8; Wilston Grange won 1
Last time they met: 18 June 2022 – University of Queensland 16.12 (108) d Wilston Grange 0.2 (2) at Base Architecture Meadows

Wilston Grange will look to break another winning drought in the Bond University QAFLW when it hosts University of Queensland at iiNergy Oval.

The Gorillas’ only home victory over the Red Lionesses came in August 2015 when Katie McGlade’s hat-trick overcame a UQ side featuring future Brisbane Lions Bre Koenen and Sharni Webb. Even in Grange’s premiership year of 2018, their only loss for the season was to the Students at home.

Long-kicking forward Brooke Sheridan left Stafford for St Lucia at the beginning of 2022 only to miss the season with injury. This Saturday, she makes her UQ debut against the club she left. Coach Clayfield will also enjoy the return of defender Charlotte Andrews and ruck/midfielder Mia Teubler.

Local junior and Lions Academic Mia Geere steps into the state league, as does Jacinta Ens, formerly of Coorparoo and a Calamvale junior, who has been named at centre halfback but may rotate through the ruck.

MAROOCHYDORE v ASPLEY
Saturday 6 May 2023, 4:45pm
Domino’s Oval, Maroochydore

Head-to-head: Played 8 – Maroochydore won 7; Aspley won 1
Head-to-head at Domino’s Oval: Played 3 – Maroochydore won 3
Last time they met: 30 June 2022 – Aspley 5.8 (38) d Maroochydore 2.3 (15) at Zupps Aspley Oval

Maroochydore’s expectation-defying start to the 2023 Bond University QAFLW will face a significant challenge when it hosts Aspley in Round 4.

Neither side is recognisable from those which produced two classic matches in six days in the 2022 Bond University QAFLW (rescheduling caused by floods), the second of which gave the Hornets its first ever win over the Roos.

However, Maroochydore has overcome a difficult off-season and a Round 1 belting by Bond Uni to win its next two matches with increasing comfort, whereas an Aspley side with genuine finals aspirations will need to find a way of beginning the match before the second quarter having scored a total of 1.1 (7) in its three opening terms to date.

The Sunshine Coasters are enhanced by the returns of Round 2 hero Naomi Fitzpatrick, club favourite Jessee Sills, and impressive Kawana junior Kiah Thompson.

Aspley’s squad depth means they have only now found room in their top-grade side for ruck Anais Kirvan, winger Bree McKenzie, and 2022 co-Best and Fairest winner Maddy Kawa. Emma Lendrum returns from injury, and Hanna Brennan makes her Queensland debut having played for Sydney’s East Coast Eagles and the Newcastle City Blues in 2022.

COORPAROO v YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE

Head-to-head: Played 33 – Coorparoo won 17; Yeronga South Brisbane won 16
Head-to-head at Giffin Park: Played 14 – Coorparoo won 7; Yeronga South Brisbane won 7
Last time they met: 9 July 2022 – Coorparoo 3.8 (26) d Yeronga South Brisbane 1.2 (8) at Giffin Park

The 34th edition of the Bond University QAFLW’s El Clasico takes place at Giffin Park on Saturday evening with Coorparoo seeking to retain the Southside Cup.

Every state league Grand Final from 2011 to 2020 contained at least one of Coorparoo or Yeronga, and the two deciders in which they met (2013 and 2017) are undisputed classics. Following two strong victories in 2022, Coorparoo leads the head-to-head count 17 wins to 16 and the overall points tally 1576 to 1468, a gap of 3.3 points per match.

Each side has a litany of reasons for making seven changes from their Round 3 teams. This gives the Kings’ an opportunity to include Bridget Taylor, formerly of Sydney’s North Shore Bombers, and Reserve Grade stalwart Courtney Alder.

The Devils welcome back Tiarnah Isua, a regular starter in 2022, and introduce fullback Stephanie Field following strong displays for Mt Gravatt in last year’s QFAW Division 1.
